Walking in Relation to Mortality in a Large Prospective Cohort of Older Adults 
This cohort study shows the relationship between walking, the most common physical activity for older adults, and total mortality. Compared with inactivity, walking below minimum recommended levels lowers all-cause mortality.

Walking at or above physical activity recommendations further decreases risk of mortality.

Walking most strongly associates with lower risk of respiratory disease mortality, cardiovascular disease mortality and cancer mortality.
